Another August Tablescape

When I showed this table to my friends many of them said it was one of their favorites.  I don't know if it's the theme or the colors or something else.  I'm very happy with this one, too.  I feel like it's very cohesive and even though the various components are from a variety of stores everything works well together.  This is the first time I've gone with just a runner and no cloth, the bare wood works well with this theme.

A coastal theme for the end of summer.
Below is the table with the first napkin set-up but then I found this fun striped ones after I had taken the initial set of pictures.  They are from Pier 1 and even have green edge stitching that matches the runner, it's like they were made just for this tablescape!

These cute little tea light shells are also from Cost Plus/world Market

my attempt at a more artistic photo

The plates are from Cost Plus/World Market, the chargers and napkin rings are from a local store. Too bad I can't use those napkin rings in other table settings. Hmmm, maybe for the Belmont Stakes?

Did I mention that I LOVE those napkin rings?

I'm still just buying pieces in sets of four. From what I'm seeing on other blogs, most 'tablescapers' usually buy much larger sets, 8 -10.  First, I'm just not organized enough yet to have a place to store everything and secondly, most of what I buy is just for fun not long term investment. The Tablescaper has the kind of storage and assortment I would be thrilled to have.

A low light shot just because I have a new camera and I can take these kinds of shots.

Yes, I do have a new camera and I'm having fun learning how to use it.  Please be patient with me while I figure this out.  See the white lantern in the upper right of the picture?  Welllll.... it used to be black.  After all the white lanterns were sold out at Ross & Marshall's I decided I wanted one.  I got some spray paint and created my own.  It has the faux candle with a timer (LOVE THOSE) so I had to disassemble it prior to painting.  All in all, I think it's fabulous.  Don't you?

While summer isn't officially over meteorologic-ly speaking but a lot of kids have already gone back to school and it is Labor Day weekend, the unofficial last hooray of summer.  The weather is changing here, cooler evenings and we've even had some rain.  My friends and I keep saying we don't want to rush the end of summer but... I've already started thinking about fall... stay tuned!

This is going to be my first attempt to join the fun over at Between Naps on the Porch.

August Tablescape - #1

Now that we're into the second half of August, I figured now was as good a time as any to post the August tablescape pictures.
Green, the color is green (anyone remember that from 'The Wiz'?)
I'm still working on getting things at different heights but my table doesn't lend itself to a large centerpiece and four place settings with chargers. I have to cheat adapt and use one place as the focal point for whatever I'm doing.  I like most of this but I never quite got it all pulled together and finalized.  Maybe next time I use this tea set, I'll set the table for two... I think I need more vases and candle holders.

Alternate view. (aka - me trying to be artsy with the camera)

Extreme close-up of the tea set.
This tea set was a gift from some friends a few Christmases ago. It's I.Godinger but I don't recall the pattern right now. I do love it and I've considered getting some matching tea cups & saucers but I've only been able to find them on so far and not really a bargain.

Yet another angle - not flattering for the tea set
The 'chargers' in this case are platters from Tuesday Morning. They're Pfaltzgraff Napoli Rooster, I believe.  Of course the rooster is covered up, mostly, in all these pictures.  I took a shot of the platter to show the rooster but it was blurry.

**Update** It seems I forgot that I actually did have a good picture of the charger. Hmmm, I wonder what else I'm forgetting?

Plaltzgraff Napoli rooster platter - Tuesday Morning

A lot like the first picture but you get to see the pear candles better here.
I suppose some kind of large figurine would work here or maybe a topiary to continue with the leaf theme?

Fancy napkin fold!
Did you know the first thing you do when you sit down to eat is put your napkin on your lap? Now, if you're at someone's home or at a meal where there is a host, you wait for the host/hostess to place his/her napkin first. Why this difference? When dining out there is often no one who is the official host so there isn't any reason to wait.
The same rule applies to when it's time to start eating, wait for the hostess to start first.  Take your cue for moving on to the next course from the host or hostess as well. Let's just hope your host isn't a very slow or extremely rapid eater. You could go hungry or spend a lot of time moving food around your plate.

Hot August Monday...

Ok, maybe not that hot but it's a bit stuffy in my 'office' today.  The view out the window is lovely, blue sky and white puffy clouds, I really like white puffy clouds.  I used to live in a place that stayed very hot all summer long and I would always wish for a few clouds to just float by and block the sun for a short time. Just a short break from the sizzling hotness that just kept beating down on us relentlessly.
I know that clouds mean moisture and what's worse than sizzling hot, unrelenting sunshine? All that heat mixed with humidity and humidity can be dreadful. But I wasn't asking for a lot of clouds just a few. Maybe just one? Anything? A large dragon fly?
I wanted to get a picture of the puffy clouds for you but the view from the deck is blocked by trees. You'll have to settle for these not so puffy but still pretty clouds.

One of my favorite 'weather conditions' (??) is a day when there are lots of clouds bouncing all over the sky and lots of sun. Every so often the clouds block the sun and the lighting in your house completely changes and for a few moments you feel a bit of relief from the scorching heat. It's purely psychological but fabulous all the same.

When I decided to start a blog, I was convinced that I was could be witty, fun and entertaining. Yeah, about that... Apparently, that person only exists in my head and for some reason I'm not able to translate all that wit into my writing.
I've decided it's probably best to leave the witty repartee to the more experienced bloggers and just work on showing you pictures of my tablescapes.  (A new one is on its way any day now). Part of 'tablescaping' (that's not really a word... yet) for me is finding ways to use the same stuff over and over in different ways.  First, it's financially sound and secondly I don't currently have a huge closet I can use to store all this fun stuff.
Right now, each grouping, for example July 4th, gets put into a storage tub that is then hauled down to the garage. The problem with that is that it's hard to find pieces that might cross-over into different seasons or groupings.  I'm not worried, eventually I'll find a way to get everything organized so that I can see it all and have easy access (perhaps another reason to downsize my wardrobe!). I've already decided to downsize the craft supplies so that I have room on that shelving unit.
I hope it's not too hot where you are today... and if it is, I'm sending you big puffy clouds to block the sun for just a bit.

July Tablescape

Happy Thursday!
As promised here are the pictures of my July tablescape. (This would be the tablescape for the second half of July that I just put away so I could start on the first setting for August)
A summery, flamingo theme here.

I love the palm tree goblets but they don't stand out next to the blue tumblers.

I tried to find a lot of flamingo stuff for a summer tablescape but apparently I was looking in the wrong places because I didn't find much but there's always next year.

I wanted flamingo napkins so I ended up having to make my own
Isn't she cute :)

Here's the whole group... flock... gaggle?  I need one more but I'll have to wait until next year.
I'm still new at this and one piece of the puzzle I don't have is various sets of flatware to match the theme; wouldn't bamboo look great here? The natural color, not the green or stainless. (This all may sound familiar to you, I just realized that I already said something similar a few posts back, oops) I bought some blue that you saw on the July 4th table and now I'd really like to find some green.  It's out there and I've seen it at Tuesday Morning but I'm waiting for the price to go down a bit.  I try to be very frugal when I'm putting my tables together.  It's fun and a creative outlet but it doesn't have to be an expensive hobby... or should I say another expensive hobby.  Ah, who am I kidding, it definitely adds up!

The good news is, I use some pieces over and over for different themes. I wish had a fancy storage room with lots of shelving for everything but it pretty much gets put in plastic bins down in the garage.

Knowing my storage limitations, my friend asked "where are you putting all this stuff?" I had to laugh, she had helped me organize my tubs of Christmas decorations last year so I could downsize, so she knows exactly how much storage I don't have.

As much as I'd like to stay and chat all day, there's a spreadsheet somewhere that needs my attention and dishes in the sink that are done with their bubble-bath. Somewhere along the way, I'm going to go out for a walk!

P.S. There's a very real possibility that I'll get the first August tablescape posted before I change it. However, out of concern for your well being, don't hold your breath.

Bragging... Showing Off... Sharing the joy!

The tablescape I did for the second half of July will have to wait (yes, it's already a couple weeks late). I'm sure you'll be patient with me.

I'm so excited about the Cute Lilly Loot, (borrowing one of my favorite references from Miss Janice) I found at Marshall's, I just had to share.

Here's the whole pink & green Lilly haul!

A closeup of just the tray
This pattern is called (let me go look since I don't remember...) no, it's actually called "Luscious" and I really like it. I don't have all the patterns memorized, I just go by what I like.  Perhaps this one wasn't a big hit and that's why there was so much of it at Marshall's or it was discontinued last year. Regardless, I am the happy owner of a fun set for next summer.
The pitcher (56 oz) and four plates - now I just need some pretty green basket-like chargers.  I didn't buy the plastic tumblers or wine glasses (2/$9.99) but I'm going to keep an eye on them. If they last and get marked down I may reconsider. I don't mind drinking out of plastic (all Lilly plastic is BPA free) but I don't like to serve my guests in plastic-ware unless we're dining outside.

"Gimme Some Leg" tech case. It's roomy enough for my phone, keys, cash & small lip balm.
The tech case was up front by the registers/check-out line... I was about to say it was an 'impulse buy' but then pretty much all of this fun Lilly stuff was an impulse buy.
I wasn't really shopping for anything specific; I stop by Marshall's, Tuesday Morning, Home Goods, & similar stores occasionally looking for great deals on pieces for my tablescapes.  This just happened to be another fabulous find day.  I found some wonderful black porcelain chargers at Tuesday Morning for my New Year's eve table but there were only three.
Tuesday Morning is like that, I often find three glasses, three plates, three platters, etc. Since a lot of what they stock are well known brands, I can always search online for that 4th piece. (I'm just not always willing to pay the prices I find online).

Stay tuned for the pictures of the July table and coming soon (as soon as it's finished) the August tablescape!!!

The cat is happily sleeping on my desk and I have reports that need my attention. Hope you're having a wonderful, preppy summer!
